Yerevan Becomes the Center of European Diplomacy on May 4–5

Yerevan is hosting the eighth European Political Community (EPC) summit, bringing together more than 40 heads of state and government. The key agenda items include the war in Ukraine, the conflict surrounding Iran, and their implications for global security. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the summit with a special speech.

During the event in Yerevan, Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. According to released reports, the negotiations were held in English. The parties discussed the development of economic cooperation, specifically the resumption of the joint intergovernmental commission and the possibility of holding its next meeting in Kyiv. Zelenskyy noted that this marks the first visit by a Ukrainian president to Armenia in 24 years.

The European Political Community was established in 2022 following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The platform was designed as a format for broad political dialogue, uniting European countries regardless of EU membership to discuss security, energy, digitalization, and climate issues. Unlike the Council of Europe, the EPC is informal, with a significant portion of contacts occurring through bilateral and small-group meetings.

On the second day of the Yerevan summit, the first-ever bilateral EU-Armenia summit is also scheduled, featuring European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa.
