A world record has been officially registered in Kharkiv for the largest ensemble of pictorial murals created using the technique of hot enamel on copper. This unique art project, located within the Kharkiv metro system, has not only garnered international acclaim but has also become a symbol of the strength, resilience, and cultural identity of a city that continues to live, create, and inspire despite all the challenges of war.
Behind every record are people who believe in what they do. Kateryna Kvasha—one of those who joined the project’s implementation and helped bring global attention to the unique work of Kharkiv artists—shared the story of these individuals and the power of art.
“Most of all, I am inspired by people—their dreams and their desire to move forward against all odds. I am inspired by a city that lives, works, and remains beautiful. The resilience of Ukrainians is deeply inspiring. As long as people continue to dream, there will always be those who help make those dreams a reality,” Kateryna says.
The initiative to establish the record came from the Honored Artist of Ukraine, Olha Yerofeyeva, the creator of the mural, who wished for this work to receive global recognition. Alongside artist Olena Morhunova and art historian Karine Yesypenko, the team began the journey toward realizing this ambitious idea.
The project took on special significance precisely because of its location. Today, the Kharkiv metro is not only the city’s transport artery but also a safe haven for thousands of people during air raids.
“Every day, people pass by this mural, seeking shelter in the metro during shelling, and often do not even realize that a world-class masterpiece is right beside them,” Kateryna notes.
The path to the record required the collaboration of many individuals and organizations. A series of art events, lectures, masterclasses, and educational initiatives were held in Kharkiv to help draw public attention to the city’s cultural heritage. Artists, teachers, youth, and dedicated Kharkiv residents all joined the cause.
The moment of the official record registration was deeply emotional for the team.
“I felt immense pride for Kharkiv, for Ukraine, and for the people around me. Even a small group of like-minded individuals is capable of creating something important for an entire city,” Kateryna shares.
She is convinced that people are the main source of strength today.
“I am surrounded by bright and strong people. When someone’s faith wavers, others offer support. We help each other move forward. And art helps us keep hope alive.”
This world record serves as further confirmation that culture remains a vital component of Ukrainian resilience. Through creativity, memory, and shared values, Ukrainians continue to speak to the world through the language of art.
“My life motto is simple: do what you can. Shine for those who need it. Inspire others,” says Kateryna Kvasha.
The story of the record-breaking mural in the Kharkiv metro is more than just an artistic milestone. It is a story about people who, even in the darkest of times, continue to create light around themselves and for generations to come.
