In recent days, the issue of nominating a candidate from Ukraine to the International Criminal Court has been actively discussed in the public space. Despite emotional statements and political speculation, the real situation remains clear and understandable: the procedure is being carried out within the established timeframe and in accordance with international norms.
As emphasized by Deputy Head of the Office of the President Iryna Mudra in her public statement, there has been no “missed deadline.” Ukraine is consistently moving forward within the defined procedure, as representation in the ICC is of strategic importance for the state.
This is not merely about formal participation, but about the opportunity to have a Ukrainian judge in one of the key international judicial institutions at a time when the country is daily defending the principles of justice, accountability, and the rule of law.
That is why the candidate selection was conducted through an open competition. Between March 24–26, 2026, the selection commission held interviews with applicants, noting their high level of preparation, deep knowledge of international law, ICC practice, and the provisions of the Rome Statute.
As a result of the selection, on April 8 the following candidates were determined:
— Lev Kyshakevych — main candidate
— Oksana Senatorova — reserve candidate
Both legal professionals have impeccable reputations, significant professional experience, and the expertise necessary to represent Ukraine at the international level.
In her statement, Iryna Mudra stressed that Ukraine has neither lost opportunities nor disrupted the process. On the contrary, a transparent selection has been conducted, forming a strong pool of candidates that meets the high standards of international justice.
This situation once again demonstrates the importance of separating facts from informational noise. International institutions operate according to clear procedures, not under the influence of emotions or political statements.
Today, Ukraine is acting precisely in this way — systematically, thoughtfully, and with a focus on results. The procedure continues, and the state continues to strengthen its position within the system of international law.
