The National Anthem of Ukraine echoed through the capital of Armenia as 16-year-old Daria Malchevska stood atop the podium. The young athlete became the European Pankration Champion among girls under 17, demonstrating not only a supreme level of training but also a true championship character.
Her path to the gold medal turned out to be deeply symbolic. Throughout the tournament in Yerevan, Daria repeatedly faced competitors from Russia, securing victory after victory. In the final match, the Ukrainian athlete once again defeated a Russian sports-woman, confidently claiming the European Champion title.
However, it was the award ceremony that drew the most attention. Together with Daria, the Russian athletes who won the runner-up spots stepped onto the podium. When the National Anthem of Ukraine began to play in the arena, they walked away and left the podium. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian champion remained standing on the highest step, holding the Ukrainian flag in her hands and listening to the anthem of her country.
At that moment, the sports arena in Yerevan became the stage for yet another victory and a powerful reminder of human dignity, respect for one’s nation, and confidence in being on the right side of history.
Following the tournament, Daria briefly and poignantly commented on the situation:
“Someone said that only Ukrainians step down from the podium?”
Sometimes, a few words are enough to say the most important things. And it is even better when those words are backed by a European Championship gold medal.
Today, Daria Malchevska serves as an inspiration for thousands of young Ukrainian girls. Her victory in Yerevan has become a moment of immense pride for all of Ukraine.
