“The Greeks Chose Ukraine”: The “Panair” Festival of Greek Culture Took Place in Kyiv

The “Panair” festival of Greek culture took place in Kyiv, bringing together representatives of the Greek community, cultural figures, creative ensembles, and guests of the event. The celebration became a symbol of unity, the preservation of national identity, and support for cultural diversity in Ukraine.

This was reported by the Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.

He emphasized that for Ukraine, it is extremely important to ensure that every national community has the opportunity to preserve its language, culture, and traditions. This is precisely part of developing a democratic European state where every citizen feels equal and heard.

Before the start of the full-scale invasion, the “Panair” festival was traditionally held in the Azov region, particularly in Mariupol and Volnovakha. Following the occupation of these territories by Russia, the decision was made to revive the celebration in the capital of Ukraine. In this way, the organizers sought to demonstrate that Ukrainian Greeks remain an integral part of Ukrainian society and have consciously chosen Ukraine.

The festival held special significance for representatives of the Greek community who were forced to leave their homes in Mariupol, Sartana, Urzuf, Manhush, and other settlements of the Azov region due to the war. Many of these places, which for decades served as centers of Greek culture in Ukraine, suffered destruction, occupation, and the forced displacement of their residents.

During the event, participants honored the memory of representatives of national communities who gave their lives defending Ukraine. Among them was a defender of Mariupol with the call sign “Hrek” (Greek), who had Greek roots and died in the struggle for the independence of our state.

Festival participants emphasized that such cultural events help maintain the connection between generations, preserve traditions, and strengthen the community even in the most difficult times. They also expressed hope that after the victory, Ukrainian Greeks will once again be able to hold their celebrations in a free Ukrainian Mariupol, Sartana, Urzuf, and other towns and villages of the Azov region.

Special words of gratitude were extended to Stepan Makhsma, the head of the Federation of Greek Societies of Ukraine, as well as to the organizers, volunteers, creative ensembles, and public organizations who put effort into holding the festival and filled it with a special atmosphere of unity, remembrance, and cultural revival.
