Romania raises retirement age for women: to 65 by 2035

The retirement age will increase annually and is set to reach 65 by 2035, aligning with that of men, Antena 3 CNN reports.

The new pension law also introduces changes to early retirement rules. Under the updated provisions, only individuals with at least 40 years of contribution record will be eligible to retire early.

Previously, women in Romania retired at the age of 63, while the retirement age for men was already set at 65. The country is now gradually moving toward full gender equality in pension regulations.

According to official data, Romania has approximately 4.6 million pensioners, with women making up the majority.

Against the backdrop of broader European trends of raising retirement ages, such reforms are seen as necessary to maintain the sustainability of pension systems amid an aging population. For instance, Germany plans to gradually increase the retirement age to nearly 70 by the early 2090s.

In Ukraine, the retirement age currently stands at 60, 63, or 65, depending on the length of insurance record, and is одинаковий for both men and women. However, according to Hlib Vyshlinskyi, Executive Director of the Centre for Economic Strategy, due to demographic losses, the war, and labor migration, Ukrainians may be forced to work significantly longer in the future — up to 70–75 years — as pension payments may not be sufficient to sustain a decent standard of living.
