Kyiv is 1,544 years old. And this year, its birthday was celebrated not only on the banks of the Dnipro River, but also in the capital of the European Union — in Brussels.
For many Ukrainians currently living far from home, this was not just a festive gathering. It was an opportunity to feel at home again, if only for a few hours, surrounded by familiar songs, their native language, Ukrainian traditions, and people who share the same love for their city and their country.
The event brought together more than just Ukrainians. The gathering was joined by ethnic Ukrainians who have lived in Belgium for many years or were born outside Ukraine, as well as local residents and friends of Ukraine who sincerely support our culture and our struggle. A special moment was the online greeting from the Mayor of Kyiv, which reminded everyone present of the connection to their hometown—a bond that neither distance nor borders can break.

The evening was filled with music, creativity, and warm encounters. Ukrainian artists performed for the guests, and the audience enthusiastically sang along to familiar tunes. There were many sincere emotions, smiles, and even tears—those special tears that well up when the heart touches something deeply dear.
One of the most important parts of the event was a charity auction. Guests had the opportunity to purchase unique items autographed by prominent Ukrainians, and all funds raised were directed toward aid and the recovery of Ukraine. Each lot came with its own story, and every bid became another demonstration of support for our country.

A special atmosphere was also created by Ukrainian treats. They were prepared for the guests by a Ukrainian woman who recently opened her own pastry shop in Belgium. The symbol of the holiday was the legendary “Kyiv Cake” — a taste familiar to many since childhood, which evoked dozens of warm memories and became yet another bridge between Brussels and Kyiv.
This day showed once again: Kyiv is much more than just a city. It is people, culture, memory, traditions, and an incredible strength of unity. And as long as Ukrainians gather together, support each other, and preserve their identity, Kyiv lives everywhere, wherever we may be.
Happy Birthday, Kyiv! We look forward to the day when we can celebrate your future anniversaries at home — under a peaceful Ukrainian sky.

The event was organized on the premises of the Association of Ukrainians in Belgium. This is a historic building that, back in the last century, served as a haven for prominent Ukrainians in Europe.
Auction lots were provided by Vitali Klitschko, Svyatoslav Vakarchuk.
Thank you to the organizers and everyone who joined as a volunteer.
