On August 23 at 3:00 PM, the Sõprus Cinema in Tallinn will host a screening of the documentary Kuzma: Scarily Funny, about Andriy Kuzmenko — a musician, television host, and one of Ukraine’s most recognizable artists.
The film tells Kuzma’s story through his music, archival footage, personal stories, and views on life. More than 400 hours of video and audio, around 22,000 photographs, and unique archival materials were used in the making of the film, much of which has never been publicly released before.
The title Scarily Funny perfectly reflects Kuzma’s character: he knew how to speak about difficult and painful topics with humor, irony, and honesty. His songs remain an important part of Ukrainian culture to this day.
The screening is particularly meaningful as it takes place on the eve of the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence. Kuzma openly spoke about Russian aggression, supported Ukrainian soldiers, and emphasized the importance of the Ukrainian language, culture, and personal responsibility for one’s country.
The screening is organized by the Ukrainian Film Club in Estonia with the support of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Estonia. The special guest will be the Ukrainian song and dance group “Volya.”
