June 24 marks the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, a date established by the UN General Assembly in 2022 to recognize the contribution of women to the development of international relations, peacekeeping processes, and global governance. This is reported by golos.com.ua.
Today, diplomacy has long ceased to be an exclusively male sphere. Women head ministries of foreign affairs, represent their states on the international stage, participate in high-level negotiations, and shape the agenda of world politics.
The UN emphasizes that the equal participation of women in diplomacy is an essential condition for building sustainable peace, protecting human rights, and ensuring effective international cooperation. Research shows that peace agreements involving women in their development have higher chances of long-term implementation and stability.
In world history, many women have left a notable mark on diplomacy and international relations. Among them are Eleanor Roosevelt, who became one of the key authors of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; Madeleine Albright, the first woman to hold the position of US Secretary of State; Condoleezza Rice, Federica Mogherini, and other leaders who defined the international agenda of their eras.
Ukraine also has a powerful generation of women who successfully represent the state at the international level. Among them are Olena Zerkal, who defended Ukraine’s interests in international courts; Emine Dzhaparova, who consistently promotes the issue of Crimea’s de-occupation; Mariana Betsa, Oksana Markarova, and many other professionals who work daily to strengthen international support for our country.
The role of women in diplomacy gained particular significance after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. It was Ukrainian women diplomats, government officials, public figures, and experts who became the voice of Ukraine on international platforms, conveying the truth about the war, defending the country’s interests, and garnering the support of the global community.
Today, Ukrainian women work as ambassadors, consuls, advisors to international organizations, and participate in global forums and negotiation processes. Their activities cover not only diplomatic representation but also humanitarian, human rights, and security issues.
The International Day of Women in Diplomacy is a reminder of the importance of women’s leadership in a world where effective communication, strategic thinking, and the ability to build partnerships form the foundation of modern diplomacy.
Today, women do not just participate in international processes — they shape them. And it is their professionalism, perseverance, and responsibility that help build a more just, secure, and open world.
