It was on this very day in 1849 that Denmark’s first Constitution was adopted, laying the foundation for modern democracy, civil liberties, and parliamentarism.
For Danes, this is not just a historical date. It is a reminder of the values that have shaped the country for generations: respect for the law, responsibility to society, an active civic stance, and the participation of everyone in the development of the state.
Democracy does not emerge on its own. It is born where people are ready to take responsibility for a shared future, respect the opinions of others, protect freedom, and trust institutions.
Today, these values are especially close to Ukrainians.
For over four years, Ukraine has been fighting not only for its territory. We are defending the right to live in a free European state, where human dignity, freedom, and democracy form the foundation of society.
For millions of Ukrainians currently living in different countries around the world, Denmark’s Constitution Day serves as yet another reminder of just how important strong democratic institutions, civic responsibility, and social unity truly are.
It is precisely these values that unite Ukraine and Denmark today.
On Denmark’s Constitution Day, we express our gratitude to the Danish people for their consistent support of Ukraine, solidarity with Ukrainians, and commitment to the principles of freedom and democracy.
