Europe Unites: How Brussels Celebrates Europe Day 2026

On May 9, Europe celebrates Europe Day, a date symbolizing the beginning of a new era of peace, unity, and cooperation. It was on this day in 1950 that French statesman Robert Schuman presented the historic Schuman Declaration, which laid the foundation for the modern European Union.

In 2026, the celebration holds special significance as it marks the 75th anniversary of this event. To commemorate the occasion, European institutions in Brussels are opening their doors to the public, inviting visitors to get a closer look at how the European Union works.

Throughout the day, guests can learn how European legislation is shaped and how it impacts the daily lives of citizens. Visitors can explore interactive booths, speak with representatives of political groups, and tour the plenary chambers.

The following leading EU institutions will be open to the public: the European Parliament, the European Council and the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the European External Action Service, and the European Committee of the Regions.

The program includes conferences, concerts, shows, entertainment for children and adults, as well as food stalls. All events are free of charge and do not require prior registration.

Location: European Quarter, Brussels

Time: May 9, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

The festive atmosphere will also reach the heart of the city — Grand Place.

On the evening of May 8, the square will come alive with a DJ set and a light show featuring the colors of the European Union flag.

On May 9, the Brussels City Hall will host a panel discussion titled “Keys to a Strong Europe.” Participants include the Mayor of Brussels Philippe Close, the Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko, former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, and EU diplomat Josep Borrell. The event will be moderated by journalist Aurélie Didier.

Location: Grand Place, Brussels

Dates: May 8–9

Europe Day is more than just a historical date; it is a reminder of the power of unity, openness, and a shared future. In 2026, Brussels once again becomes the place where Europe feels truly alive and connected.
