Easter in Paraguay: How Ukrainian Traditions Come Alive Across the Ocean

In distant Paraguay, more than 15,000 kilometers away from Ukraine, the bright tradition of the Resurrection of Christ has come alive once again.

At the Church of Iglesia Ortodoxa de la Dormición de la Virgen María, a solemn Easter service and the blessing of traditional Easter breads (paskas) took place. The service was led by Father Pavlo, bringing together parishioners of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the Republic of Paraguay in a shared prayer in their native Ukrainian language.

This moment was especially moving: regardless of distance, language, or continent, Ukraine resonated here—in the hearts of the people.

After the service, the blessing of paskas took place. It was here that an interesting cultural feature became evident. Most of the Easter breads brought by local residents were without the glaze or decorations familiar to Ukrainians. In Paraguay, a different tradition has been preserved—the paska remains uncovered, without icing, and is decorated only with braided dough patterns or delicate floral designs.

A true highlight for those present was a single paska decorated with traditional Ukrainian white icing. It sparked genuine interest among the parishioners and became an occasion for cultural exchange. Ukrainians explained that historically, paskas were decorated with dough elements—braids, crosses, and flowers. Over time, however, the custom of covering paska with white icing became widespread in Ukraine, symbolizing festivity, purity, and light.

Thus, in a small church in Paraguay, two traditions intertwined—local restraint and Ukrainian ornamentation—creating a unique atmosphere of unity.

This once again proves: it does not matter where you are geographically; what matters is what you carry in your heart. Ukraine lives wherever its memory, faith, and traditions live.

Blessed Easter! Cherish your heritage, honor traditions, and preserve the warmth of family and faith in your heart.

Because no matter where you are, Ukraine always begins with you.
