Overnight into June 15, a Russian attack caused severe damage to one of Ukraine’s most significant spiritual and cultural symbols, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. TSN reports this.
According to preliminary data, at least five sites of national importance and several local landmarks were damaged. The Dormition Cathedral, one of Ukraine’s primary shrines, suffered the most severe impact. A major fire broke out as a result of the strike, engulfing the upper section of the church.
In addition to the Dormition Cathedral, the Kushnyk Tower sustained damage, as did the building of the Mystetskyi Arsenal National Art and Culture Museum Complex, where a fire also broke out.
Despite the critical situation, the prompt response of the clergy, museum staff, and emergency services allowed for the evacuation of the most valuable exhibits. Among the rescued relics are unique 16th to 19th-century artifacts from the “Christ is Risen” exhibition, as well as the reliquary of Saint Stephen.
Efforts to mitigate the aftermath of the attack and assess the scale of the destruction have been ongoing throughout the day on the territory of the Lavra. Experts are also evaluating the condition of the iconostasis, frescoes, and historic murals, which may have been damaged by fire and high temperatures.
The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is under enhanced international protection in accordance with the Second Protocol to the 1954 Hague Convention.
This attack serves as yet another reminder that the strikes target not only cities and infrastructure, but also the cultural heritage that shapes the national memory and identity of a people.
Today, Ukraine continues not only to defend its territory, but also to fight for the preservation of its history, culture, and spiritual values for future generations.
